What is osmosis?
Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a cell's membrane.
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration.
What is the difference between the two?
Osmosis is the movement of water, whereas diffusion can be any substance.
Is energy used in either process?
Energy is not used in either process.
What is a concentration gradient? Give an example.
A concentration gradient is when there is an uneven distribution of the concentration of a substance. For example, an uneven distribution of ions across a semi-permeable membrane.
How do the terms solute and solvent fit in learning about osmosis and diffusion?
An example of the terms solute and solvent fitting in learning about osmosis and diffusion is salt being a solute and water being a solvent, because salt is a solid which is dissolved in a liquid (definition of solute) and water is a liquid that a solvent is dissolved in (definition of solvent). Osmosis and diffusion have to do with the dissolving of substances in water and other solvents.
Is water always a solvent? Why or why not?
Water is not always a solvent because not all substances can dissolve in it.
