Osmosis:
- the diffusion of water across a membrane
- a phenomenon that is related somewhat to the change in freezing point, the change in boiling point, and the change in vapor pressure of solutions when compared to pure solvents
- the process by which small molecules automatically cross a semi-permeable membrane, compensating for a difference in the concentration of those molecules on either side of the membrane
Membranes:
Semi-permeable: has pores in it which allow some things to go through
Non-permeable: does not have pores
Types of Solutions:
Isotonic - If the concentration of salt is equal on both sides, the water will move back in forth but won't have any result on the overall amount of water on either side. Because the solute concentrations are the same on both sides of the membrane, water molecules move through the membrane equally well in both directions. There is no net flow of water in either direction.
Hypotonic - there are less salt molecules outside the cell, water will move into the cell, the cell will gain water and grow larger
Hypertonic - there are more salt molecules outside the cell, which causes the water to be sucked in that direction. The cell may die
Water moves from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
