- The Human Genome Project is a scientific project. The participating scientists were trying to identify all of the genes in a human body before 2001. Now they are trying to store the information in a database. This information has potential benefits to science, medicine, and human life. It will help us better understand how the genes make up a human body and how we can use that information to find cures and make better medicines. The goals and scientific approaches of the publicly funded universities working on this project differ from those of the privately-funded research companies that are also involved in the fact that the private companies helped catalyze the multibillion-dollar U.S. biotechnology industry and fostered the development of new medical applications.
- There is a widespread use of DNA as evidence in criminal and civil cases. If used correctly, this evidence is, in fact as straightforward and clear-cut as the popular press often implies. Making your personal DNA information publicly available can be harmful to you because it can cause you to lose your job due to your genetic information.
- Some harmful or inconvenient sex-linked traits include diseases and color-blindness. A sex-linked trait that I found especially interesting was the disease Haemophilia. The authors of the sites that I found suggest that individuals who carry the genes for these traits use prenatal testing in order to avoid having children who will inherit the harmful traits.
- An epigenome is the apperence of a gene caused by changes in the DNA sequence. The Human Epigenome Project is doing research in this new area. They are focusing on identifying, cataloging, and interpreting DNA methylation patterns of all human genes in all major tissues. They hope to advance the ability to understand and diagnose human diseases with this information.
